Getting Started as a Welile Tenant

Welile pays your landlord the rent you owe, and you repay Welile in small amounts over an agreed period. This page puts the whole journey in order so you know what comes next.

The journey, step by step​

  1. Understand what you are agreeing to. Read how rent plans work first. You repay more than your rent, because of two fees, and it is far better to know that now than after you apply.
  2. Get your details together. See what you need — your National ID, your landlord's phone number, your village and your LC1 chairperson.
  3. Register. Either do it yourself at welileapp.com, or ask a Welile agent to sit with you and do it.
  4. Your rent request is submitted. Registering and applying happen in the same form — see your rent request.
  5. Welile checks everything. Your details, your landlord, your home and your LC1 chairperson. Expect phone calls. See review and approval.
  6. Your landlord is paid. Not you — your landlord. See after your rent is approved.
  7. You start repaying the day after your landlord is paid. See how to repay.
  8. You keep repaying until your balance reaches zero, and you get a message after each payment.
  9. Your plan completes. See completing your plan.
  10. You can apply again for your next rent period. See renewing your plan.

Two things to be clear about from the start​

Welile pays your landlord, not you. No money comes to your phone from a Rent Plan. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are not describing Welile.

Applying is not approval. Your request is checked before anything is paid. The confirmation screen you see after submitting says your request was received — it does not mean your rent has been paid.

How long the whole thing takes​

Registering and applying takes one sitting, maybe twenty minutes if you have your details ready.

Review takes longer, and how much longer varies a lot. Some requests are approved within a few days; others wait weeks, usually because a review stage is waiting on somebody. See review and approval for what to do if yours seems stuck.

What it costs​

Your repayment is made up of your landlord's rent, a one-off request fee, and an access fee for spreading the payments over time. All three are shown to you before you confirm anything.
