What Happens When Your Welile Rent Is Approved

Approval means the checks passed and your rent can be released. Two things then happen: your landlord is paid, and your repayments begin.

Your landlord is paid, not you

The rent goes to your landlord. No money from a Rent Plan arrives on your phone.

Your agent may be the one who hands it over, at your home, with your landlord confirming receipt from their own phone. Your landlord signs for it.

Nobody should ask you for money at this stage

There is no fee to release your rent, and no payment to anyone to "unlock" it. If somebody asks you for cash before your landlord is paid, refuse and contact Welile.

Everyone is texted at the same moment

When your landlord is paid, three SMS go out on that one event — to you, to your landlord and to your agent. You do not need a smartphone to find out.

Your message

You receive an SMS welcoming you to Welile that tells you:

  • your rent has been paid, and to which landlord;
  • that your repayment starts tomorrow, with the day named;
  • your instalment, and how many days the plan runs;
  • your total to repay;
  • your agent's name and phone number, and that they will collect from you;
  • a reference for the plan.

Keep this message. It is the clearest single record of what you agreed to, and it is worth showing your agent if a figure is ever disputed.

Your landlord's messages

Your landlord is texted twice. Before the handover they get a code, with a warning to share it with the agent only if they want to receive the money — that is what stops a payout being claimed without their knowledge.

Afterwards they get a receipt: the amount, your name, who processed it, the date, a receipt number and a link to view it.

Your agent's message

Your agent is told the landlord has been paid, the receipt number, the day you start repaying and your instalment, and is asked to upload the receipt.

If the messages do not arrive

Check the phone number on your application is the one you use. Then ask your agent, or ask your landlord to show you their receipt message.

Do not take anybody's word that your rent was paid without one of those. See messages you receive.

Once the plan is running, your tenant dashboard also shows your total, your balance and your instalment.

When repayments begin

The day after your landlord is paid.

Not the day you applied, and not the day you were approved. If your landlord is paid on a Monday, your first payment is due Tuesday.

What you will owe

The instalment you agreed when you applied — daily if you earn daily, weekly if you earn weekly. It does not change.

See understanding your balance for what each figure on your plan means.

What to do first

  1. Confirm with your landlord that they received the rent.
  2. Note your instalment and the day it starts.
  3. Decide how you will pay — through your agent, or directly with the merchant code. See how to repay.
  4. Pay the first one on time. Starting well is easier than catching up.
