How to Create a Welile Promissory Note

You create a note once a partner has actually committed. Have their details and the agreed amount in front of you before you start.

Before you start​

  • The partner's details — name, phone number, WhatsApp number and email.
  • The agreed amount.
  • Whether it is monthly or a one-off, and for monthly, which day of the month.
  • Which opportunities to earmark, if you are using self support.

The steps​

  1. Open the promissory note form from your dashboard. You can also start it from a house you are looking at, using Create & Share — that pre-selects the house for you.
  2. Enter the partner's details. The email has to be valid; the note is how Welile reaches them.
  3. Enter the amount committed.
  4. Choose the payment type — see the note below, because the labels are not obvious.
  5. If monthly, set the deduction day — the day of the month the contribution is collected.
  6. Choose the support mode. For self support you must attach at least one house or tenant rent plan. See the two support modes.
  7. Attach the opportunities — either ready-to-fund rent plans or verified empty houses. One kind per note, not a mixture.
  8. Review everything, particularly the amount and the partner's contact details.
  9. Create and share the note.

The payment type labels are confusing​

On the form the choices read Monthly and Compounding.

  • Monthly means what it says: a recurring contribution, collected on the deduction day you set.
  • Compounding is the label used for a one-off lump sum.
Explain this to the partner in plain words

"Compounding" on this form means a single lump-sum contribution, not a monthly one. It is a poor label and it will mislead a partner who reads it over your shoulder.

Tell them plainly: "one payment now" or "a payment every month on the [day]", and confirm which they meant before you create the note.

After you create it​

The note appears in your notes list as pending until the money is actually there, and earmarked houses are held for seven days.

Common problems​

It will not let me submit. Check the amount is entered, the email is valid, and — for self support — that at least one house or rent plan is attached.

I attached the wrong kind. A note carries houses or rent plans, not both. Start again with the kind you meant.

The partner's details were wrong. Fix them with support rather than creating a duplicate note for the same commitment.
